Telluride
Airport
The Telluride Regional
Airport is the highest commercial
airport in the United States with an elevation of
9,078 feet above
sea level. It is surrounded closely by mountains of over 14,000 feet.
Telluride's short runway
and instrument approach procedures do not
accommodate larger jet aircraft that also lack the performance to
utilize
this high altitude field effectively. Consequently, during the
winter months approximately 20% of the
scheduled commuter airline flights
divert to another airport that is at least an hour and a half taxi ride
from
the resort area of Telluride over winding two-lane mountain roads.
The Telluride Regional Airport
is self-supporting and does not receive any funding from the community.
The fees
we charge keep the airport open. Open 365 days a year from
7:00 am until 30 minutes after sunset. No aircraft
shall land or
take off from the airport during the period between 1/2 hour after sunset
and 6:00 am local time
(or 1/2 hour before sunrise, whichever is later).
